The title of Laura’s talk is: Design Vertigo – Fear of Failing
Beating gravity, or holding things up, is a consistent design intention in design from architecture to furniture to transport, packaging and fashion. There is a symbolic nature to that elevation: when height or balance is achieved it is synonymous with power, success and attainment. The concept of falling (from both literal and metaphorical heights) is in fact the idea of failing (fail from the Latin for fall) and to wonder what failure in terms of design practice actually is. Is failure something to fear or is it a productive quality?

Laura Houseley is a design writer, editor, curator and consultant. She began Modern Design Review, a sporadic publication, some-time gallery and creative consultancy in 2016 and is currently enjoying working inefficiently between the disciplines
